Rucky Chuck (WS Run)
Rucky Chuck checkpoint is located just downstream from
the Rucky Chuck rapids on the Middle Fork of the American River. It is the
place where the runners ford the river from Placer County into El Dorado
County. A second checkpoint is maintained on the south side of the crossing
point, known as Rucky Chuck Farside.
Rucky Chuck requires VHF and UHF mobile capability with a
Good Mobile, Base Station or Yagi Antenna. Must have Battery or Generator power
only. An HT is a must because of the size of the site, and the need to
occasionally move around it.
Francisco's (WST Ride)
The Ride checkpoint called Francisco's is meadow area
located just uphill from the Rucky Chuck river crossing used by the runners.
Riders do not ford the Middle Fork here. After completing the Francisco's
vetcheck, they continue about two miles downstream and cross the river at
Poverty Bar.
Access to Rucky Chuck and Francisco's is off
Foresthill Road, about 2 miles down via Driver's Flat Road. Driver's Flat
Road is graded, steep, narrow, and sometimes heavily rutted. Parking is very
limited at the bottom. All non-staff vehicular traffic is stopped at
Auburn-Foresthill Road. Crews during the Run are allowed, but must walk down
from Drivers Falt. Crews are not allowed at the checkpoint during the
Ride. Designated horsetrailers make the trip in and out to evacuate any pulled
horses and their riders.
Francisco's requires VHF and UHF mobile capability with a
Good Mobile, Base Station or Yagi Antenna. Must have Battery or Generator power
only.
