Duncan Canyon is back in business for the Run as of
2006. USFS had kept the Duncan Canyon area off limits following the Star
Fire in 2001. Now, the dangerous "widow maker" trees have been removed and the
trail is once again open and safe.
Duncan Canyon was once used by the Tevis Ride, but has
been bypassed since the mid-1990s in favor of using FS road N43 from Red Star
to Robinson Flat.
Duncan Canyon aid station is in the general vicinity of
the French Meadows Reservoir along Mosquito Ridge Road, approximately 2-1/2
hours drive from Auburn. The checkpoint itself is normally set up about a 1/4
mile off the vehicular road, requiring you to hike in with your equipment. It's
a good idea to bring an umbrella or other source of shade as it can get quite
warm as the sun rises.
Duncan Canyon requires VHF and UHF mobile capability with
a Good Mobile, Base Station or Yagi Antenna. Must have Battery or Generator
